The story of Madeira, dating back to the 1420's, is one of remarkable success for the maritime world. They found that stocking up on essentials was invaluable whilst following global trade routes passing this island.

Wine was high on the list of essentials and it was the Portuguese who twigged that fortifying wines made them less susceptible to the rigours of ocean travel. 

The fact that as part of the process Madeira is 'cooked' at 40C for 6 months is another part of the story, which I am always happy to share.
