Background
The Glenfarclas distillery is a family-owned distillery that has been in operation for over 150 years. The distillery is located between the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness, on the banks of the River Spey. Glenfarclas was one of the first distilleries to open to the public, and today offers tours and tastings. The distillery is also committed to creating the very best quality Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Glenfarclas was founded in 1836 by John Grant. In 1865, the distillery was purchased by John's son George. George's son, John Gordon, took over the distillery in 1913 and passed it on to his son, George S. Grant, in 1952. George's son, John, is the current owner and distillery manager of Glenfarclas.
Production
Even though the recipe is simple – just spring water, malted barley and yeast – it is the decades of experience which goes into the distillation that makes this distinctive, award-winning whisky one for every home, especially if you're a whisky drinker.
The whisky is made from malted barley that is sourced from local farmers in the Speyside region. The barley is ground into a grist and mashed with water to produce wort. The wort is then boiled in a copper pot to produce a distillate. The distillate is then aged in oak casks for 10 years.
Glenfarclas Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been awarded numerous awards, including "Best Single Malt Scotch" by the World Whisky Awards and "Master of Malts" by Jim Murray.
Aged in Sherry Casks
Alongside the 150 years of distilling experience, the selection of the casks is one of the reasons for the whisky’s unique taste. John Grant, the current chairman, visits a specific bodega in Spain to select the finest European oak casks which have previously been used in the production of Oloroso sherry.
The ageing process inside the sherry casks is what gives the whisky its golden straw-like colour. There are no artificial colours added, just natural goodness.
Glenfarclas produces three ranges of whiskies; the Aged Range, the 105 Cask Strength and the Family Cask Range.
- The Aged Range are single malt whiskies that are between 10 and 40 years old. You can read the tasting notes for each year on the website.
- The 105 Cask Strength, as its name suggests, is a stronger whisky, deep gold in colour, with an almost toffee aroma and spicy flavour. Despite its strength, it is smooth and warm.
- The Family Cask Range is produced from a single cask with bottles going back to the early 1960s.
A Sweet flavour fused with Winter Spice
We love and highly recommend the Glenfarclas 'youthful' 10 year old, which is a bright, gold colour and described as having aromas of sherry sweetness with malty winter spice combined with honey, vanilla and pear drops.
Like all Glenfarclas whisky, it is 100% matured in Oloroso sherry casks and takes on the sherry-sweet flavour, dried fruit, cinnamon and cloves which is why this particular blend offers more complexity than your average whisky.
